7.27.15: July is for Baseball

Happy Monday! Start your week off with this no-hitter from Cole Hamels of the Philadelphia Phillies!

QUIPS FOR THIS WEEK

MLB

David Ortiz (aka Big Papi) had a big Sunday night last night. The Boston Red Sox star had two three-run home-runs in a big win over the Detroit Tigers.

As we mentioned in our intro, Cole Hamels also had a big weekend. The Philadelphia Phillies pitcher had a no-hitter against the Chicago Cubs on Saturday night just as trade rumors continue to heat up. Conversations are being had with at least six potential teams, but the Texas Rangers or the LA Dodgers seem the most keen on matching up on a deal. Stay tuned!

Major League Baseball also introduced their latest class  into the Hall of Fame over the weekend.

Soccer

Last night, Mexico took on Jamaica for this year’s CONCACAF Gold Cup final and came out on top 3-1 to win their seventh all-time title. The last time the Mexican team won the Gold Cup crown was in 2011, with a 4-2 win against USA. To get to the final this year, Jamaica beat out USA (the defending champion) 2-1, and Mexico clinched a 2-1 win against Panama last week.

Golf

This past week, Jordan Spieth was unable to reach his goal of winning the Grand Slam. The 2015 British Open ended with 2007 Masters champion Zach Johnson taking home the Claret Jug after a three-way playoff. Louis Oosthuizen and Marc Leishman ended in second and third places, respectively.

Congratulations to the 2015 Tour de France winner, Chris Froome. Born in Nairobi, Froome represented Britain in the historic race. This is his second win at the Tour de France.

The United States ended up on top at this year’s Pan Am Games: Team USA had a final total of 265 medals — 103 of which were gold. Host Canada finished second in both counts, winning 217 medals and 78 golds.

Kyle Busch’s successful return to the racetrack continued as he picked up a win at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway on Sunday night. He has now won three consecutive Sprint Cup Series races, and four of the past five.

QUIPS FOR THIS WEEK

MLB

MLB All-Star week was a big success this past week in Cincinnati. The Reds’ third baseman Todd Frazier  was the big winner of the HR Derby and the LA Angels’ Mike Trout was named the MVP of the All-Star Game. Next year’s game will be hosted by the Washington Nationals.

It was actually a great week for Mike Trout. The MVP helped his LA Angels squad get past the Boston Red Sox with a walk off home run.

Post All-Star it was back to baseball for teams this weekend. Of note, the New York Mets defeated the  St. Louis Cardinals on Sunday evening after 18 long innings.

Soccer

After this weekend’s CONCACAF Gold Cup matches, Wednesday’s semifinals will feature the United States v. Jamaica  and Panama v. Mexico at 6pm and 9pm ET respectively. To get to the semifinals,  Panama took home the win on penalties against Trinidad and Tobago. The United States pulled ahead with a win against Cuba 6-0, Jamaica joined the semifinals after a 1-0 game against Haiti, and Mexico beat Costa Rica 1-0.

Golf

In St. Andrews, Scotland, Jordan Spieth is looking to make history and win the Grand Slam. After winning both the U.S. Open and the Masters, he has to clinch the third leg — The Open — today. He finished up Sunday at The Open 11-under overall, and is headed into today’s final round one stroke behind Paul Dunne, Jason Day, and Louis Oosthuizen. If he wins, he’ll be the first player since Jack Nicklaus in 1972 to win all three and earn the Grand Slam title.
