5.2.16: Play On!

Good morning! Game 1 of the Washington Capitals‘ series against the Pittsburgh Penguins ended on an exciting note with T.J. Oshie’s overtime game-winning hat trick. Even though it happened on Thursday, it’s too exciting for you to miss –

QUIPS FOR THIS WEEK

NBA

A lot can change in a week, especially in the NBA.

This weekend, we saw the Miami Heat top the Charlotte Hornets 106-73 to win the series 4-3 and the right to play the Toronto Raptors, Sunday’s other big winner 89-84 over the Indiana Pacers. The other side of the East will see the Cleveland Cavaliers take on the Atlanta Hawks, starting on Monday night.

Out West, the Golden State Warriors won Game 1 against the Portland Trail Blazers without Steph Curry (as he recovers from a knee injury) 118-106. Of note, the Blazers beat the LA Clippers to get to this series after the Clippers suffered season-ending injuries to both Chris Paul and Blake Griffin. Oh, and the San Antonio Spurs look to go up 2-o against the Oklahoma City Thunder when they meet tonight in Game 2.

Oh and Luke Walton is the new head coach of the LA Lakers.

Hockey

And, we’re squarely in Round 2 of the Stanley Cup playoffs. After tonight’s games, the Dallas Stars lost at home 3-4 in OT to the St. Louis Blues to tie up that series 1-1, and the Nashville Predators lost 2-3 to the San Jose Sharks (series is at 0-2). The New York Islanders are tied 1-1 in their series against the Tampa Bay Lightning, and will play again on Tuesday night at 7pm EST. The Washington Capitals are tied 1-1 in their series against the Pittsburgh Penguins, and will play again tonight at 8pm EST.

Soccer

Last Monday, Tottenham Hotspur drew 1-1 against West Bromwich Albion. Why is this such an important score? Well, Tottenham is in the #2 spot in the table, and with this draw, they ensured that they were stuck there. Even though on Sunday, Leicester City drew 1-1 against #5 Manchester United, they’re still in the top spot, just waiting to hear how Tottenham performs against Chelsea today. If Tottenham loses or draws against Chelsea, they’ll clinch the Premier League title. If Tottenham wins, Leicester will have another chance to seal the deal next weekend. In other news, on Saturday #3 Arsenal scored a 1-0 win over Norwich City, and then on Sunday, #4 Manchester City lost 2-4 to Southampton.

In the first leg of the Champions League semifinal, Manchester City drew 0-0 against a Real Madrid team lacking Cristiano Ronaldo on Tuesday, and on Wednesday, Atletico Madrid beat Bayern Munich 1-0. Atletico and Bayern Munich will play leg 2 this Tuesday the 3rd at 2:45pm EST, and City v. Real Madrid will take place on Wednesday the 4th at 2:45pm EST.
