8.24.15: Land of Summer

Good morning! We’re so excited to watch Jen Welter’s success as the first female NFL coach during the Arizona Cardinals’ training camp – check it out:

QUIPS FOR THIS WEEK

MLB

The New York Yankees lost CC Sabathia to a knee injury on Sunday night. It is expected that he will placed on the DL indefinitely.

The Houston Astros are looking good. After sweeping the LA Dodgers over the weekend, the Astros are heading into September with October baseball on their minds. Watch out.

The New York Mets expect David Wright to return from injury and get back into the lineup this Monday. Wright has been on the DL since mid-April.

NFL

A tough loss for the Green Bay Packers as Jordy Nelson went down with a knee injury in a preseason match-up against the Pittsburgh Steelers on Sunday night. The Packers hope that today’s results do not show what is feared to be a torn ACL.

In other injury news, it looks like Maurkice Pouncey of the Pittsburgh Steelers  will have to have surgery to repair a damaged ankle.

Soccer

In the Premier League, Chelsea debuted Pedro Rodriguez (who signed from Barcelona this week). On Sunday, Chelsea — with the help of Rodriguez — finished out their game against West Bromwich Albion 3-2. Looks like Chelsea has bounced back from their 3-0 loss to Manchester City last week! In additional Premier League news, Manchester City maintained their winning streak as they beat Everton on Sunday, 2-0.  Today at 3pm EST, tune in to watch Arsenal take on Liverpool.

In La Liga news, this weekend we saw Barcelona beat Athletic 1-0 and Real Madrid finish their game against Real Sporting de Gijon 0-0.

In MLS, the LA Galaxy took home a win against NYC FC, 5-1. The Galaxy have now won four straight MLS games. This game is especially important because of how heavily promoted it was — this was the first Major League Soccer game that past English teammates Frank Lampard and Steven Gerrard would play against each other.  Prior to the game, NYC FC ruled that Lampard was unfit to play.

Other

JR Smith announced  that he will return to the Cleveland Cavaliers on a two year deal.

The Little League World Series is currently taking place in Williamsport, Pennsylvania. But, don’t expect to see another star like Mo’ne Davis during this year’s competition, because the qualifying teams are all male.

Jamaican superstar Usain Bolt retained the world 100m title at the World Athletics Championship this weekend. He was a hundredth of a second faster than this year’s fastest man in the world, Justin Gatlin.

Are you ready for US Open tennis to begin on August 31st? BecauseSerena Williams and Roger Federer sure are !
